Employer sponsorship Q&A
Changing Employer or Losing Your Job on a 482 Visa
A 482 holder whose sponsored employment ends generally has up to 180 consecutive days to find a new sponsor or make arrangements to leave, subject to a cumulative 365-day limit across the visa period. A new nomination is normally required.
Does a 482 visa end immediately after job loss?
The visa does not normally cease automatically on the last day of employment, but conditions continue to apply and cancellation may be considered depending on the circumstances. Confirm the last working day, VEVO conditions, visa expiry and both consecutive and cumulative days away from sponsored employment.
Can a 482 holder work for a new employer during the 180 days?
Current settings provide time to find another sponsor and permit work within the prescribed period, but continuing under employer sponsorship generally requires the new employer to lodge and obtain an appropriate nomination. Occupation changes, licensing and the new role must also be checked.
Is a new 482 visa application always required?
Where the existing visa remains valid, a new employer may in many cases begin with a new nomination. Whether a further visa application is needed depends on expiry, occupation, stream and individual circumstances. An unexpired visa alone does not authorise indefinite work for a new employer.
Does changing employer affect the two years for 186 TRT?
It can affect the timeline but does not necessarily erase all earlier eligible employment. Current TRT guidance can count eligible sponsored work across employers in the preceding three years, subject to the qualification of each period, nomination timing and evidence.
What should a worker do after redundancy or before changing sponsor?
- Keep the termination notice, last working day, payslips, superannuation and leave records.
- Check VEVO and visa expiry immediately; calculate the 180-day period and 365-day aggregate.
- Before commencing a new sponsorship process, verify the employer, occupation, salary and nomination.
- Compare a new 482, subclass 186, another visa or departure arrangements.
- Preserve evidence and seek help if there is underpayment, coercion or payment for sponsorship.
