Skills assessment centre

Match the occupation, authority and evidence before the visa strategy.

Understand how skills assessment works, where it fits in migration, and compare 12 major assessing authorities.

More than degree recognition

An occupation-specific decision about whether your evidence meets the Australian standard.

Assessors may examine qualification level and subjects, actual employment duties, paid-work evidence, English, registration, supervised practice, portfolios, project reports, interviews or practical tests.

A suitable result is important evidence for migration. It does not itself guarantee a visa, state nomination, professional registration or employment.

01 · Three core dimensions

The assessor reads the whole evidence story.

A similar job title is not enough. Qualification, employment and occupational fit must support the same conclusion without unexplained gaps or contradictions.

Qualification

Level, subject content, accreditation and completion date

Employment

Duties, seniority, hours, dates and genuine payment

Occupation fit

Whether all evidence supports the nominated occupation

Usually required before a valid points-tested EOI.

Subclass 189, 190 and 491 generally require a suitable assessment. Employer-sponsored visas apply different rules: subclass 186 commonly requires one, while subclass 482 and 494 depend on the occupation, stream and circumstances.

189 / 190 / 491Core pre-EOI requirement
186Commonly required
482 / 494Pathway specific
01

Qualification + employment

The most common model; qualification relevance changes the experience required.

02

Competency or project report

Used where study is not directly accredited, such as an engineering CDR.

03

Interview or practical test

Common in selected trade and competency-based pathways.

04

RPL / experience pathway

Some authorities accept deeper experience and project evidence instead of a related qualification.

04 · Assessment roadmap

From occupation choice to a usable outcome.

01
Choose occupation

Compare duties, study and visa-list access rather than selecting only by job title.

02
Confirm authority

Identify the authorised body and correct assessment pathway.

03
Build evidence

Prepare consistent study, employment, payment, registration and English records.

04
Lodge and verify

Respond to further information, interviews or practical testing.

05
Use the outcome

Reconcile the skilled date, occupation and expiry with EOI and visa planning.

FAQ

Questions that change the strategy

Does every assessment require English?

No. English may be an authority, professional-registration or visa requirement. These must be checked separately.

Can I apply without a related qualification?

Sometimes. ACS RPL and certain experience pathways are examples, but many regulated professions require specific study.

Why can the skilled date be later than my job start date?

Some authorities deduct experience used to meet the assessment standard. Only the recognised skilled period may be usable for points.

What if the outcome is unsuitable?

Review the reasons before choosing review, appeal, reassessment, a different occupation or stronger evidence.

How long is an outcome valid?

Authority and visa rules differ. Plan expiry together with English results, EOI timing and invitation risk.

XIVisa assessment planning

Test the occupation and evidence strategy before paying an authority.

We can compare occupation options, select the correct pathway, identify evidence gaps and align the outcome with points-tested or employer-sponsored visa planning.
