Employer-Sponsored Occupation Lists and Skills Assessments

Subclasses 482 and 186 now use ANZSCO 2022 and the CSOL framework, while subclass 494 and other skilled visas may use ANZSCO 2013. Check code, duties, list, caveat and assessment for the specific visa.

Which ANZSCO version applies to 482 and 186?

Home Affairs states that subclass 482 SID and subclass 186 use ANZSCO 2022, including occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List. Subclass 494 and other listed skilled visas may continue to use ANZSCO 2013 and the MLTSSL, STSOL or ROL.

Why can one occupation name have two codes?

ANZSCO updates can split, combine or rename occupations. Select the code by the actual duties and the version used for the intended visa. A code from an earlier visa or assessment should not be carried into a new 482 or 186 nomination without checking.

Which employer-sponsored visas usually require a skills assessment?

PathwayGeneral assessment position
482 Core SkillsNot compulsory for every applicant; specified occupations, passports or circumstances may trigger assessment
186 Direct EntryA suitable assessment is generally required unless an exemption applies
186 TRTNo blanket pre-application assessment, but skills must be shown and an assessment may be requested
494 Employer SponsoredA suitable assessment is generally required unless exempt

What is an occupation caveat?

A caveat adds restrictions to the use of certain occupations in SID or 186 Direct Entry. It may concern business size, turnover, seniority, work setting or duties. The same occupation label does not make every employer and position eligible.

What is the safest search sequence?

  1. Identify possible occupations from genuine day-to-day duties.
  2. Choose the visa and stream.
  3. Check its ANZSCO version, list and caveats.
  4. Confirm the assessing authority, assessment type and validity.
  5. Cross-check the occupation against the employer role, salary and applicant evidence.
