Why Older CELPIP, LANGUAGECERT and MET Results May Not Be Accepted
Whether an English result can be used for an Australian visa depends not only on score and validity, but also on whether that test was recognised under the applicable instrument on the test date.
Australia updated several English-language instruments in 2025 to add CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic and the Michigan English Test. Recognition now does not necessarily make a result from before commencement retrospectively usable.
The test date matters, not only general validity
LIN 25/016, LIN 25/090 and LIN 25/014 commenced on 7 August 2025. The subclass 482 instrument LIN 25/082 commenced on 13 September 2025. Their transitional provisions principally preserve tests already recognised under predecessor instruments and do not create broad retrospective recognition for the newly added providers.
Check four matters before lodgement
- the visa subclass or English standard being addressed;
- the current legislative instrument for that requirement;
- the provider, test date and component scores;
- the commencement, application and transitional provisions.
One result does not automatically work across all visas
Student, subclass 485 and subclass 482 visas, and competent, proficient or functional English standards may be governed by different instruments. A provider appearing in a general Home Affairs table does not establish that every score, test date and visa subclass is covered.
