Skilled migration · Q&A
Are 65 Points Enough for a Skilled Migration Invitation?
Sixty-five is the minimum points threshold for the points-tested 189, 190 and 491 pathways. It is not a guaranteed invitation score.
What does 65 points mean?
Home Affairs states that subclasses 189, 190 and 491 are points based and require an EOI score of at least 65. SkillSelect calculates an indicative score from claims including age, English, employment and qualifications.
Why might 65 points not produce an invitation?
Home Affairs expressly states that meeting the minimum threshold does not guarantee an invitation. Subclass 189 is affected by occupation and ranking, while subclass 190 and state-nominated 491 pathways also depend on each jurisdiction's occupation access, streams and priorities.
What should a strategy review include?
- Whether the nominated occupation is available for the intended visa.
- Whether every points claim can be evidenced.
- Recent subclass 189 competition for the occupation.
- Whether a target state accepts the applicant's profile for 190 or 491.
- Realistic opportunities to improve English, employment or partner points.
