Skilled & state nomination

South Australia opens limited onshore ROIs; WA adds a defence industry stream reference

SA has confirmed a limited onshore ROI opening and continued offshore EOI selection. WA's website now mentions a defence industry stream, but corresponding detailed requirements remain unconfirmed.

Two state nomination developments deserve attention for the 2026–27 program year. South Australia has announced an ROI opening for a defined onshore group. Western Australia's nomination page now refers to a defence industry stream and WASMOL Schedule 3. The first provides a stated intake scope; the second does not yet establish a complete application pathway. Applicants should distinguish these stages before deciding whether to submit, prepare evidence or wait.

1. SA's ROI opening is for a defined onshore group

The South Australian Government's 22 October announcement concerns people living and working in SA whose current visas expire by 31 January 2027. Residence, employment and visa expiry must be considered together, alongside the relevant occupation and stream requirements. Being onshore or approaching visa expiry is not sufficient on its own.

Applicant situationPublished arrangementPreparation point

OffshoreContinue with a valid SkillSelect EOI; no ROI requiredKeep the EOI accurate and check the applicable occupation and stream
Later expiry, or not living and working in SAThis announcement alone does not establish access to this ROI intakeDo not treat the limited opening as unrestricted onshore access

31 January 2027 describes the current-visa expiry range, not an announced ROI closing date. It should not be presented as a deadline until which everyone can wait to submit. Nomination planning also does not replace separate arrangements to remain lawful when a visa expires.

2. Priority sectors do not amount to an invitation guarantee

SA identifies construction, defence, education, engineering, health and manufacturing as priority sectors, while allowing consideration of high-ranking candidates elsewhere. A current SkillSelect EOI is required. Sector priority is not a substitute for individual eligibility or evidence, and this announcement is not an issued invitation round.

Preparation should connect the nominated occupation with actual duties, employment location and supporting records rather than rely on an employer's industry label. An opening, an invitation to apply for nomination and the later assessments are different stages; none should be represented as an assured outcome.

3. WA's defence reference is visible, but the detailed framework is incomplete

In the Eligibility section of WA's State Nominated Migration Program page, Defence industry stream now appears between General stream and Graduate stream. Its occupation reference is WASMOL Schedule 3. This is visible government webpage text, not a third-party rumour.

However, when checked on 25 October, the same page's overview table still covered General Schedule 1, General Schedule 2 and Graduate only. The stream-specific section did not provide a corresponding standalone defence section, and the criteria PDF link still pointed to a previous-year document. The introductory reference and the supporting detail do not yet fully align.

4. Two different stages, not two equivalent openings

For an SA resident worker with an approaching visa expiry, the immediate question is whether the published intake scope and supporting requirements fit the facts. For someone watching WA's defence reference, useful preparation starts with existing occupation, work and location records. A new stream name alone is not a sound basis for moving states, changing jobs or enrolling in a course.

Frequently asked questions

Does any onshore applicant with a visa expiring by January qualify for SA's ROI opening?

No. The announcement also specifies living and working in SA. Relevant occupation and stream conditions must still be reviewed; being elsewhere in Australia does not satisfy that description.

Should an offshore applicant lodge an SA ROI because of this announcement?

No ROI is required for offshore candidates under the stated arrangement. SA selects suitable candidates from valid SkillSelect EOIs.

Can every defence-related occupation now apply through WA?

That cannot be concluded from the new reference. The stream label, the occupation list and an individual's eligibility are separate matters requiring confirmation of the applicable formal requirements.

Are these confirmed new invitation rounds?

No. This article covers SA's ROI intake arrangement and WA's website reference, not newly issued invitation results.
